Wellington Football Club are back in the premier division of the Toolstation Western League after an absence of more than 20 years.
We clinched promotion by winning the first division championship for the first time in our history last season – finishing four points clear of Sherborne Town and scoring 124 goals in the process.
Our club was formed in 1892 and, for many years, played in the local Taunton and Tiverton leagues before gaining admission to the Somerset Senior League in 1962.
We then progressed to the Western League, now the Toolstation League, in 1978, gaining promotion to the premier division in 1981 before being relegated back to the first division in 1984.
We run three senior sides with the reserves and thirds both playing in the Devon and Exeter League and also have a thriving youth set-up with a record 14 teams of both boys and girls in the current campaign.
We have also achieved FA Charter Standard status for ‘adult clubs’ – the first in Somerset to do so – and have since progressed to earn the ‘development club’ award.
The clubhouse development took place in 1973 and the function room was built by club members in 1976. The club’s bar is open seven days per week, manned entirely by voluntary staff.
The dressing rooms were added in 1978, floodlights installed in 1986, a pitch surround erected in 1990 followed by extensive and ongoing alterations to the changing rooms, lounge and function room. Promotion to the premier division has involved a further raft of ground improvements, including a 100-seat grandstand, hard-standing at both ends of the pitch and a removable screen down entire the length of one side.
